Tharah Kardu

There is a famous saying in Kullu about the deities: “Tharah Kardu”. Tharah literally means eighteen and Kardu means basket. Tharah Kardu is used to represent all the deities of Kullu by the local people. One of the legends behind it goes as,

Once the Great Vedic sage, “Jamdagni” was returning from his pilgrimage at Kailash. He had with him images of different gods in a kardu or karanda (a basket). When he reached the “Chanderakhani” pass, Banasur a great demon of Malana sensing the approch of the sage, sent a fierce storm across the mountain top. Struggling to stay on his feet, Maharishi Jamdagni’s basket was thrown away from him, scattering the images throughout the Beas/Kullu valley. Wherever these images fell they became Deity of the locality.
